A travel clinic worth the drive from the coast

Newcastle Clinic is the travel service at Great Park Pharmacy and Clinic, a GPhC registered pharmacy at Newcastle Great Park. From Whitley Bay it is 7.8 miles and about twenty-two minutes, which is a drive rather than an errand. What you get for it is a pharmacist-led appointment that starts with your itinerary, everything that can safely be given on the day given on the day, and free parking directly outside the door.

A travel clinic for Whitley Bay, twenty-two minutes inland

Whitley Bay is a coastal town in its own right rather than a suburb that happens to face the sea. St Mary's Lighthouse stands on its island at the north end, the seafront has been steadily rebuilt over the past decade, and the promenade stays busy in weather that would empty most places. Around thirty-nine thousand people live here, a mix of retirees who have been in the town for decades and families who moved out for the beach, the schools and the Metro line.

It is also the furthest town we write a page for, and there is nothing to gain from dressing that up. Great Park is 7.8 miles inland and about twenty-two minutes by car from Whitley Bay. That is a journey rather than an errand. So the honest question is not whether we are near you, because we are not. It is whether the drive earns itself.

What the drive has to earn

For most Whitley Bay households the alternatives are a GP travel appointment, which often means waiting several weeks and then finding only part of what a traveller needs is covered, or a run into Newcastle city centre and the parking that comes with it. Great Park replaces both with one stop. You book directly, so there is no referral stage and no queue, and everything that can safely be given is given on the day. For a family planning a long trip that is the difference between one twenty-two minute drive and three. Parking is free and directly outside the door.

How a travel consultation works

The appointment starts with your itinerary rather than a list of products. Where you are going, when you fly, how long you are away and what you will be doing when you get there. That last part changes the answer more than the country name does.

The risk assessment

A pharmacist reviews your plans against current NaTHNaC and WHO country advice, then works through what actually shifts risk: the regions you are visiting rather than the country as a whole, the time of year, rural or urban, your accommodation, contact with animals, altitude, and any planned volunteering or fieldwork. Your own health history matters too, including pregnancy, long-term conditions and what you have already had.

Timing before you travel

Six to eight weeks ahead is the comfortable window, because some courses are given as more than one dose spaced apart. If you are inside that window, come anyway. There is almost always something useful that can be done. Where a course cannot be finished before you fly, we say so plainly and tell you what the remaining doses would involve.

What to bring

  • Your itinerary, including internal travel and rough dates, not just the country
  • Any record of vaccines you have had: a red book, an old travel card or a photo of one
  • A list of your current medicines
  • Details of any long-term conditions, allergies or pregnancy
  • Any visa paperwork that specifies what evidence is required

We hold Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies, Meningitis ACWY, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Polio in stock. Whether antimalarial tablets come into the conversation depends on the destination and the itinerary. They are prescription-only medicines and are subject to assessment. See our booking page for current rates.

What Whitley Bay travellers tend to come in for

The town's split between settled older residents and younger families shows up clearly in what people book. Retired travellers from Whitley Bay tend to be doing the longer trips: extended touring, cruises with a long list of ports, and several weeks away rather than a fortnight. Those itineraries usually need more than one vaccine and a schedule that fits around a fixed departure date, which is exactly the sort of thing worth sorting properly in one sitting rather than in instalments.

The family side of the town books around school holidays, often with children in the room, and wants everyone put on the same timetable so there is no second trip inland for one outstanding dose. We also see people visiting family abroad, where the assumption is often that nothing is needed because it is home, and Hajj and Umrah travellers who need Meningitis ACWY given and certified the same day for a Saudi visa application. The Metro is how most of Whitley Bay gets anywhere, but Great Park is not on the line, so this one is a car journey.

Getting to Unit 5, Middleton North from Whitley Bay

There are two sensible ways over. The direct one is to head west out of town on the A191, then join the A19 and run south towards the Great Park turn-offs. The coast route is the alternative if you are starting from the north end near St Mary's and would rather not cut through the middle of town at a busy hour.

Either way it is 7.8 miles and about twenty-two minutes in ordinary traffic. Allow longer at the school run, and longer again on a warm weekend when the seafront is full. We are at Newcastle Great Park, immediately west of the A1 and north of Gosforth, so you head inland the whole way and never enter Newcastle city traffic.

The address is Unit 5, Middleton North, Wagonway Drive, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE13 9BH, and free patient parking sits directly outside the unit. Most appointments are finished inside half an hour, so the whole thing, drive included, is comfortably under two hours out of your day. Book online or call 0191 447 3839.

What you get

What the appointment covers

One appointment, an honest answer, and no upsell on things you do not need.

Destination risk assessment

An itinerary-specific review against current NaTHNaC and WHO advice, not a generic checklist. Where you are going, when, for how long, and what you will actually be doing there.

The travel vaccines people actually need

Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies, Meningitis ACWY, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Polio, held in stock.

Hajj and Umrah certificates

Meningitis ACWY administered and certified the same day, which is what a Saudi visa application asks for.

Antimalarial advice

Whether your destination needs antimalarial tablets, and what taking them involves. Antimalarials are prescription-only medicines and are subject to assessment.

Families and groups

Children, couples and whole families planned together, so everyone travels on the same schedule rather than in three separate appointments.

One appointment where possible

We give what can safely be given on the day and tell you plainly if a course needs a second visit, rather than booking you back in by default.

How it works

Three steps from booking to travelling

Book, come in, get what you need. Most people are done inside half an hour.

01

Book online or call

Pick a slot and tell us where you are going, when, and for how long. It helps to know your rough itinerary, not just the country.

02

Come to Great Park

Unit 5, Middleton North, Wagonway Drive, NE13 9BH. Free parking directly outside. A pharmacist goes through your itinerary, your health history and what you have had before, then tells you what you need and what you do not.

03

Vaccinated and on your way

Most people are done inside half an hour. You leave knowing what was given, what is still due, and what to do about anything that needs a second dose.
