A travel clinic a straight run south of Morpeth
Newcastle Clinic is the travel service at Great Park Pharmacy and Clinic, a GPhC registered pharmacy at Newcastle Great Park. From Morpeth it is 9.5 miles and about twenty minutes, all of it on the A1. It is a drive, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is also a simpler one than carrying on into Newcastle, and it ends with free parking directly outside the door.
A travel clinic twenty minutes down the A1 from Morpeth
Morpeth is a Northumberland market town rather than a Newcastle suburb, and it still behaves like one. The River Wansbeck loops through the middle of it, the market place and the old chantry building anchor the centre, and around fourteen and a half thousand people live in and around the town. It is an older and comfortably off population with county-town habits, and by any measure a well-travelled one.
It is also the furthest town on our list at 9.5 miles. We are not going to call that local. What Morpeth has that the nearer towns do not is a clean run. The A1 passes both ends of the journey, so the drive is about twenty minutes and almost none of it is stop-start.
Morpeth already drives for this
Private travel health provision in Morpeth itself is limited, which means most people here are already used to getting in the car for a travel appointment. The usual destination is Newcastle, and that is where the comparison gets interesting. Great Park sits short of the city on the western side of the A1, north of Gosforth, so you come off the road before Newcastle traffic starts and park free directly outside the door. For a Morpeth traveller the trip is shorter, simpler and cheaper to park at than carrying on into town.
The rest follows from that. You book directly rather than waiting for a GP travel slot, and everything that can safely be given on the day is given on the day. If a course genuinely needs a second visit we say so at the time rather than booking you back in by default, because a second run down the A1 is a real cost to you.
How a travel consultation works
The appointment starts with your itinerary rather than a list of products. Where you are going, when you fly, how long you are away and what you will be doing when you get there. That last part changes the answer more than the country name does.
The risk assessment
A pharmacist reviews your plans against current NaTHNaC and WHO country advice, then works through what actually shifts risk: the regions you are visiting rather than the country as a whole, the time of year, rural or urban, your accommodation, contact with animals, altitude, and any planned volunteering or fieldwork. Your own health history matters too, including pregnancy, long-term conditions and what you have already had.
Timing before you travel
Six to eight weeks ahead is the comfortable window, because some courses are given as more than one dose spaced apart. If you are inside that window, come anyway. There is almost always something useful that can be done. Where a course cannot be finished before you fly, we say so plainly and tell you what the remaining doses would involve.
What to bring
- Your itinerary, including internal travel and rough dates, not just the country
- Any record of vaccines you have had: a red book, an old travel card or a photo of one
- A list of your current medicines
- Details of any long-term conditions, allergies or pregnancy
- Any visa paperwork that specifies what evidence is required
We hold Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies, Meningitis ACWY, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Polio in stock. Whether antimalarial tablets come into the conversation depends on the destination and the itinerary. They are prescription-only medicines and are subject to assessment. See our booking page for current rates.
What Morpeth travellers tend to come in for
Morpeth's demographic shows in the bookings. A lot of it is the longer, more ambitious end of travel: multi-country touring, cruises with a long itinerary of ports, safaris and extended trips where people are away for weeks rather than a fortnight. Those trips rarely come down to one injection. They need a schedule mapped across several vaccines, timed so the last dose lands before a departure date that was fixed months ago, and that is the kind of planning this town tends to want done properly and early.
Second homes and family abroad account for a good share of the rest, along with people who travel the same route every year and want to know what has changed in the advice since last time. We also see Morpeth families around the school holidays, planned together so nobody is left with an outstanding dose, and Hajj and Umrah travellers who need Meningitis ACWY given and certified the same day for a visa application. Morpeth tends to book earlier than the towns closer in, which helps, because it leaves room for a course that needs spacing.
Getting to Unit 5, Middleton North from Morpeth
This is the simplest route of any town we serve. It is the A1 south the whole way from Morpeth, roughly 9.5 miles, and about twenty minutes in normal conditions. There are no awkward junctions in the middle of it and no need to cross Newcastle. Newcastle Great Park sits immediately west of the A1 and north of Gosforth, so you leave the A1 and you are effectively there.
Morpeth has a rail station on the main line, but the train takes you into Newcastle city centre and you would then have to come back out northwards, so for this trip the car is the easier option.
The address is Unit 5, Middleton North, Wagonway Drive, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE13 9BH, with free patient parking directly outside the unit. Most appointments are done inside half an hour, so with the drive at each end you are looking at well under an hour and a half. Book online or ring 0191 447 3839.
What the appointment covers
One appointment, an honest answer, and no upsell on things you do not need.
Destination risk assessment
An itinerary-specific review against current NaTHNaC and WHO advice, not a generic checklist. Where you are going, when, for how long, and what you will actually be doing there.
The travel vaccines people actually need
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies, Meningitis ACWY, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Polio, held in stock.
Hajj and Umrah certificates
Meningitis ACWY administered and certified the same day, which is what a Saudi visa application asks for.
Antimalarial advice
Whether your destination needs antimalarial tablets, and what taking them involves. Antimalarials are prescription-only medicines and are subject to assessment.
Families and groups
Children, couples and whole families planned together, so everyone travels on the same schedule rather than in three separate appointments.
One appointment where possible
We give what can safely be given on the day and tell you plainly if a course needs a second visit, rather than booking you back in by default.
Three steps from booking to travelling
Book, come in, get what you need. Most people are done inside half an hour.
Book online or call
Pick a slot and tell us where you are going, when, and for how long. It helps to know your rough itinerary, not just the country.
Come to Great Park
Unit 5, Middleton North, Wagonway Drive, NE13 9BH. Free parking directly outside. A pharmacist goes through your itinerary, your health history and what you have had before, then tells you what you need and what you do not.
Vaccinated and on your way
Most people are done inside half an hour. You leave knowing what was given, what is still due, and what to do about anything that needs a second dose.
Why Morpeth travellers choose us
Morpeth has limited private travel health provision of its own, so people here already drive for it. The difference is that we are twenty minutes straight down the A1 and you come off the road before Newcastle traffic starts, with free parking at the door. Long tours and cruise itineraries get their whole vaccine schedule mapped in one visit.
The A1 south the whole way from Morpeth, with no need to go into Newcastle. Newcastle Great Park sits immediately west of the A1 and north of Gosforth, with free parking directly outside Unit 5.
