Ear wax removal at Newcastle Clinic is done by microsuction, which uses gentle suction and a microscope rather than water. It takes about twenty minutes, costs £45 for one ear or £55 for both, and needs no GP referral. If we look and there is no wax, you pay nothing.
What microsuction actually clears.
A diagram of a blocked ear canal and a clear one. These are illustrations, not photographs of a patient. We will replace them with real before and after images once we have them, with consent.
Before
AfterThe images above are illustrations, not photographs of a patient. Results vary between people, and how much wax there is on the day decides how much difference you notice.
Twenty minutes, three parts, no water
We look first
Both ears, with an otoscope. If there is no wax to remove we say so, and there is no charge for the look.
We clear it
A fine suction tube under a microscope, one ear at a time. Noisy, sometimes odd, and it should not hurt.
We check and explain
A look at the canal and eardrum afterwards, what we saw, and how to keep it from building up again.
When microsuction is the answer, and when it is not
We would rather tell you now than take a booking we cannot help with.
- Blocked or muffled hearing that came on gradually
- Fullness, pressure, or your own voice sounding loud
- Hearing aids whistling or not seating properly
- A GP has told you there is wax
- You cannot have irrigation, including after ear surgery or with a perforation
- Sudden hearing loss over hours or days, which is treated as urgent
- Discharge, bleeding or a fever
- Severe ear pain
- Recent ear surgery, unless your surgeon has cleared it
- Children under 12
If any of these apply and you have already booked, ring us and we will cancel it without charge.
One price, said up front
That is the whole cost. We look first, and if there is no wax to remove we do not charge you for the appointment. Card or cash on the day, nothing taken when you book.
